We have all heard the saying,"life is what you make it." I believe that this is a quote that needs to be in an obvious place so that every individual could see it before leaving home and going out into the world to do whatever it is that they intend to do. There is so much power in this statement. Why? It’s the truth. Where there is truth, there is power.
There is so much confusion, frustration, and suffering that could be eliminated from one’s life if they just understood this very simple, yet powerful statement. It is not enough to understand this from an intellectual level, in order for this to be effective, we have to understand it from a deeper level within ourselves. When we begin to understand this from a deeper level, we will soon discover that there is nothing that is going on in our life that we did not somehow, on some level, create. We will discover that there is no one or nothing outside of ourselves to blame for anything in our life, and to do so would be a waste of our time and our energy. We discover that growth and self-awareness is about accepting complete and total responsibility for every area of our life, not just the positive aspects, but the negative as well.
We have grown up in a culture where we want and are happy to accept all of the kudos for the positive things that are happening in our life, but when it comes to the negative things, we are quick to place the blame and responsibility on someone or something outside of ourselves. Understanding that our life is what we make it, means accepting the totality of our life’s circumstances.
There is nothing more powerful and liberating than to truly comprehend that our life is what we make it. This gives us choices, unlimited choices as to what we are going to make of our life, and how we will handle the situations and circumstances that life presents.
It took me a while to realize that everything that was showing up in my life, good or bad, was due to choices that I was making in my life. And that if I was not happy with what was showing up, I needed to make different, better choices. Remember this, every choice has a consequence. If we make a bad, negative choice in a situation, we are going to experience a bad, negative consequence. If we make a good, positive choice, we will experience a good, positive consequence. It’s really that simple.
Along our life’s journey we will not always make the best choices for our life, but at some point in time, we have to become mature and wise enough to realize that we have to make better choices if we desire to live a better life. There is the saying that "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result." I will be the first to admit that this was my way of living for a while, but then there came a time when I deeply understood at a deeper level, that I had to do something different in my life, if I wanted my life to be different.
The good news in all of this is that we each have within us the potential, ability, tools and wisdom to make our lives a masterpiece if that is what we desire. There is not a person who is walking this earth who does not have the ability to make their life what they want to make of it. We must simply be willing and courageous. We must be willing and courageous enough to stop sitting around complaining about life. Willing and courageous enough to stop living in the past with all of the old hurts that are serving no purpose other than to keep us stuck. Willing and courageous enough to eliminate anything or anyone that is not adding to our life is a positive manner. We must be willing and courageous enough to show up for life and do the required work on self, not on others, SELF! We must be willing to forgive, others and ourselves for past mistakes. We cannot move forward, holding on to the past. Let it go! Most importantly, in my opinion, we must be willing and courageous enough to love others, ourselves and this crazy, beautiful life.
We are here to grow and shine forth the greatness from within ourselves, and in order to do this, we must accept that life is what we make it, and to make it great, we don’t settle for anything less than that.
There is always a choice in life, and whatever we choose will determine what our life will eventually become. It is time for each of us to stop walking around living smaller versions of ourselves. It is time we step into our light, our greatness, our full potential and unlimited possibilities. This is how life was intended to be lived.
Since recorded history, all of the Mystics, Sages, Teachers and Philosophers have left us with this message in countless different ways; That we all are born of greatness, but this greatness must be cultivated and brought forth from within, it will not happen on it’s on. We are the Authors of our life’s story and our life is what we make it.
